FIELD DAY!
Plattsmouth Amateur Radio Club to participate in Field Day
Across North America, more than 30,000 amateur radio operators are expected to participate this weekend in an exercise in emergency communications. When a natural or manmade disaster hits an area, normal communications often fail. Whether it was New York on 9/11 or the Gulf Coast in 2005, thousands of telephone and cell phone users discovered that their service would not work. In such circumstances, emergency services often call on amateur radio operators for communications support. Field Day is an annual exercise in communication under simulated emergency conditions.
The Plattsmouth Amateur Radio Club is participating in field day at Young Memorial Park in Murray. Operators will be making contacts all over North America using emergency power and temporary antennas. The public is invited to stop by between 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, and noon Sunday, June 26, to see the operation and even operate a radio and make a few contacts themselves.
For over 100 years Amateur Radio—sometimes called ham radio—has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet. Amateur Radio is also a diverse hobby for those with interests as varied as radio controlled models to digital communications to space satellites. Participants range in age from five to 100.

(Editorial - with this new focus on STEM and all the effort to get young folks interested in technology - there is no better fun, then to be their
in the tent as our local Hams compete to contact the world with wire antennas - morse code keys, and satellite links - and big smiles.
The traditions and fun that hams have for their bother, and sister hams is something special - share it with a young person - Computer John N0LZH )
