OAKLAND-CRAIG Preview

lions_football.jpg

Oakland-Craig is a very big and physical ball team that brings a good mix of power football and a good passing game to the field.  Senior starting quarterback Kolton Charling is out with injury, but Sophomore Preston Johnson does a very good job in his absence.  He is a great threat to run tough and a pretty good passer.  Sean Lawler is probably their top player on the team.  He is a 6’4” 285 pound senior that plays on the line, but also lines up in the backfield from time to time.  He is getting a lot of looks from Division II schools.  Up front they average about 6’2”, 210 pounds, so they truly are dominating up front.  We’ll do our best to battle the big boys and use a different approach to challenging them.

Offensively, we will try to use our team speed to combat the size up front.  An outside running game along with a quick strike passing game will be our approach.  With the size they have up front they are not real quick, so we will try to take advantage of that, and we’ll keep them honest by running between the tackles at times.

In this David and Goliath matchup we feel it is just that.  No one really expects the little guys to be able to compete with the size they have, but we feel confident that we can do things to make this a ballgame and take advantage of our strengths.  One of the best things about our team is that we DO compete and play hard.  The kids have had a great attitude and work ethic and with district play coming up it is anybody’s ballgame.

Opening Reception

Friday Evening, September 18, 2009, 7-10PM

Featuring new and recent work by

Debra Groesser, Melissa Husby, Rob Quinn

Dear Art Lover,

With the opening of the new show this Friday, the Gallery gets back onto its evening reception schedule. Though for this particular show, it will be on Friday instead of Saturday to avoid conflict with a certain fall event that emanates out of Lincoln most Saturdays every football season! The Saturday afternoon summer experiment worked well, bringing in some new artists and visitors to the Gallery. The nice, informal feeling through the summer felt fresh and relaxed, and I look forward to having a similar summer agenda in 2010.

This Friday night, September 18th, from 7 – 10PM, will be the opening reception for three artists that have been in the Gallery for quite some time. Deb Groesser and Melissa Husby are very accomplished painters working mostly, but not exclusively in oil. Robert Quinn is a younger up and coming sculptor who has been spending time working for Jun Kaneko while he refines his technique. The juxtaposition of the Melissa and Debra’s classic, more formal style with the edgier and sometimes jocular ceramic pieces of Robert’s, gives the Gallery a heterogeneous feel
that should provide plenty of visual stimulation.

Debra Joy Groesser was born in England and has lived in the Ralston, Nebraska area since 1970. She received her BFA degree in painting from Bellevue University, Bellevue, Nebraska in 1978. She has been a full time in 1996, and currently her main focus is plein air landscape painting in oil.  Debra has recently made several inroads on the national level, participating in juried and invitational shows across the country, including the Salon International 2008 and 2009 Exhibitions at Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art Auctions, Oil Painters of America Central Region Juried Exhibitions, American Impressionist Society National Juried Exhibitions, Carmel Art Festival, and Door County (Wisconsin) Plein Air Festival. Debra also recently had an article in American Art Collector, a very well respected national publication.

Melissa Husby has been with the Gallery almost since its inception. She inspired the first show in March of 2002 after the initial opening in November of 2001, and has been hanging work here off and on ever since. For the past couple of years she has been living in Lincoln, Nebraska and working on her masters through a university located in her home town of San Francisco, California, painting almost non-stop except for her trips to the coast for student/ instructor consultations and critiques. It has been a long and arduous road from San Francisco to Sante Fe, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas and now back in the Cornhusker state, but she continues on her lifelong path of becoming a master in her field. Melissa also spends time teaching from her home studio and encouraging painters of many ages and backgrounds to pursue their love of the craft.

Robert Quinn has less of a background due to his fewer years on the planet, but has been refining his technique ever since I met him a few years back. Whether alone in his studio or under the tutelage of Les Bruning, Jun Kaneko or others, Rob is constantly on a path of discovery when it comes to his art. His large ceramic heads and figures show the influence that sculptor Viola Fray, a pioneer of California ceramics known for her colossal clay figures, has had on Rob, though his pieces are uniquely his own. The mixture of mediums from ceramic to wood and metal gives his work a feeling of wanting to be around for future generations. It will be fun to watch Rob progress as an artist as his ideas mature and expand with his knowledge.

That about covers things for this Friday, but there is a full fall schedule ahead. October 10th and 11th is the Annual Fall Jewelry Show that is also being done in conjunction with Coop de Ville and Feathers in Louisville and Soaring Wings Winery in Springfield as a fundraiser for the YWCA’s Career Closet. There will be more detailed information to follow on that, but mark it on your calendar now as a must do weekend in the country. The following Sunday, October 18th, brings live music back to the Gallery  stage with our second Singer/Songwriter Sunday Afternoon. This show will feature the original music of 6 local musicians as they take turns performing original compositions. The spring event was a great time and we are looking forward to another great lineup of local talent. Show starts at 2 and advanced ticket purchase is recommended.

Finally for the year is the Eight Year anniversary Show. This is a music themed show titled Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar.  Now, just in case you do not understand what that means, go to this link, www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZv6hL6aYfQ, and watch the Andrew Sisters on youtube, then poke around at some of the other versions. Maybe a little too distracting when there is work to be done, but we all need a break now and then.

I guess that is about it for now, so do not forget that the opening is Friday instead of the usual Saturday (one less day for me to get ready-yikes, better stay off of youtube!!). If you have any questions you can email me directly at louisvilleartgallery@gmail.com . Remember, if you just hit reply, your email will go to ‘who knows where’ in cyberspace.

Thank you for all of your past support, hope you can make it, and as always, feel free to forward this to all of your art-loving friends!

Hope to see you on Friday STEVE

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

EXPANDED ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT LOCAL PUMPKIN PATCH

Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm Announces New Attractions for Fifth Season

school_house.jpg

Guests attending the fifth-annual Pumpkin Festival at Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm, rural Avoca, NE, will be treated to some new attractions this season.  The pumpkin patch and agri-entertainment venue has been expanded for 2009 to include hay rides and the newly renovated Schoolhouse Café.

“For many people, when they think of the ultimate pumpkin patch experience they envision a hay ride out to the pumpkin field.  We are very excited to finally be able to offer this experience to our customers,” say farm owners Terry and Teresa Lorensen.

A certified concession kitchen has been added to the 1890’s one-room schoolhouse which the Lorensens moved to the farm and restored last year.  Guests can order from the lunch menu which includes hot sandwiches and homemade pie, and then enjoy their meal at tables in the authentically restored classroom.

“This is a one-of-a-kind dining experience.  While we’ve been serving lunch for the past three seasons, having a certified kitchen and a building dedicated to the Café will allow us to better serve our customers, will make work easier for our employees, and should offer us new opportunities to produce our own baked goods and food mixes in the future,” Teresa Lorensen said.

Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm’s Pumpkin Festival runs every Friday through Sunday from September 19th to November 1st.  Hours are 1:00-6:00 p.m. Fridays and 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.  The farm is open at other times by appointment for field trips and parties.  The $4.00 admission charge includes access to all the attractions on the farm, including the opportunity for every visitor to take a hay ride.

For a complete schedule of events, which include special days such as Military Family Weekend, Doggy Day to benefit the Capital Humane Society, and Ag Day with the Conestoga High School FFA, visit the farm’s website, www.BloomPumpkinPatch.com.

I was only one of the many deer in the headlights expresions that they saw in the crowd. However as the event gained momentum, various groups and creative folks took notice. The word spread and curious people came from the parks, and all around to see what Louisville was up to.

There was something exotic, charming and inclusive about the event. There is a harvest feeling and a familiar theme that attracted people who normally just sit on their hands and watch others in events like this.

It turns out that everyone has enough talent to create a scarecrow. Not everybody could author an art banner worthy of critical review by the indiginous art commumnity, but everybody knows how to staple a gunny sack full of weeds, onto a 2x4 cross and wrap it with some stinken duct tape.
