Bloom
Where You’re Planted Farm Announces New Attractions for Fifth
Season
Guests
attending the fifth-annual Pumpkin Festival at Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm,
rural Avoca, NE, will be treated to some new attractions this season. The pumpkin patch and agri-entertainment
venue has been expanded for 2009 to include hay rides and the newly renovated
Schoolhouse Café.
“For many people, when they think of the ultimate pumpkin patch
experience they envision a hay ride out to the pumpkin field. We are very excited to finally be able
to offer this experience to our customers,” say farm owners Terry and Teresa
Lorensen.
A
certified concession kitchen has been added to the 1890’s one-room schoolhouse
which the Lorensens moved to the farm and restored last year. Guests can order from the lunch
menu which includes hot sandwiches and homemade pie, and then enjoy their
meal at tables in the authentically restored classroom.
“This
is a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
While we’ve been serving lunch for the past three seasons, having a
certified kitchen and a building dedicated to the Café will allow us to better
serve our customers, will make work easier for our employees, and should offer
us new opportunities to produce our own baked goods and food mixes in the
future,” Teresa Lorensen said.
Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm’s Pumpkin Festival runs every Friday
through Sunday from September 19th to November 1st. Hours are 1:00-6:00 p.m. Fridays and
10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The farm is open at other times by
appointment for field trips and parties.
The $4.00 admission charge includes access to all the attractions on the
farm, including the opportunity for every visitor to take a hay ride.
For a complete schedule of events, which include special days such as
Military Family Weekend, Doggy Day to benefit the Capital Humane Society, and Ag
Day with the Conestoga High School FFA, visit the farm’s website,

Louisville's Jennie Allen
Jennie Allen, daughter of Doug and Linda Allen of Louisville, will be receiving the Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program’s highest honor, Level 6 – Diamond, at the annual Achievement Party on Sunday, November 1 at the Expo Building on the Cass County fairgrounds, Weeping Water, Nebraska, beginning at 3:00 p.m. This award is equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle Scout Award. The Diamond Clover Program was introduced into Nebraska 4-H in December, 2007, and Jennie will be Cass County’s first 4-Her to receive this honor.
The
Nebraska Diamond Clover Program is designed to encourage 4-H youth ages
8 – 19 to engage in a variety of projects and activities that will
enable members to acquire the life skills necessary to lead successful
lives as competent, caring and contributing citizens. The program’s
overall goal is to provide 4-H members a rich and diverse learning
experience.
The
program consists of six levels that require a 4-H member to plan and
report a broad range of age-appropriate accomplishments. The program
is designed to enable every 4-H member willing to exert the effort an
opportunity to be recognized, regardless of how they are involved in
4-H. Jennie successfully completed all six levels as well as the community service project within Level 6.
Jennie’s Diamond Clover project contributed to the community of Louisville. She chose to overhaul the local Flag Pole Garden at the Riverview Cemetery in Louisville due to the need for a permanent, deer resistant, more appealing garden. Jennie researched plants, garden maintenance, and design to increase knowledge;
met with several professionals for advice; met with and presented her
proposal to the Louisville City Council for approval; contacted all
necessary city personnel after approval; researched funding sources and
solicited funds for the project; recruited and managed volunteers to
help with the work; and made provisions for the project to continue
through the efforts of her 4-H club. Jennie has 110 hours invested in
this project with over 100 hours of match time from youth and adults
and $2,854.83 worth of donated labor. She was able to negotiate a 35%
savings for flowers and had a total of $176.34 actual cost for flowers,
supplies, and adornments. Local organizations, city government,
residents and visitors were pleased and impressed with the scope of her
project and final result of her efforts.
Jennie would like to thank the Louisville City Council, community
organizations, her parents, her 4-H club members and leaders and
Diamond Clover Review Committee for funding, labor, donations and time
for her Diamond Clover Project.
Jennie has been active
in 4-H for twelve years as a member of the Country Crickets 4-H Club
and has served as a Junior Leader for six years and as a youth member
of the Cass County 4-H Council for four years. She is a 2009 graduate of Louisville High School and is currently attending Midlands Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska as an Anderson Scholar majoring in Business and is a member of the girls track team.
The public is invited to attend her celebration in conjunction with the Achievement Party.

Otoe County Genealogical Society
The Otoe County Genealogical Society will hold its
November 12th meeting at the Morton-James Public Library. This meeting will
welcome all new members into the society, and will also cover topics of interest
concerning genealogical research in the Otoe County area. This meeting is open
to all who are interested in joining the society, or just wish to attend to
learn more about genealogical research in general.
During this meeting we will be conducting our
quarterly Genealogy Internet Workshop, where we will be introducing our members
to the valuable genealogical resources that are available on the Internet. This
workshop is designed to assist those researchers who are unsure of how to locate
their family's history online. So if you are new to the Internet and would like
assistance in this area, please stop by and join us in our free workshop. Also,
for those visitors that prefer to research their ancestors through more
conventional means, the library's Genealogical Reference Room will be open at
this time, and assistance will be provided by society members in this area as
well.
Our society meets on the second Thursday of every
month at 7:00 pm, and our meeting location alternates every other month between
the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse, and the Morton-James Public
Library in Nebraska City. To learn more about the society, please check out our
website, or contact the Morton-James Public Library for more
information.

Trick Or Treat!
Our Volunteers Giving out the Goodies..
On Halloween Night Our Louisville Volunteer
Rescue Fire Fighters will be handing out candy
I guess this is the second year, and I am wondering where that tradition came from?
We may be the only Community where our Fire Fighters hand out candy on Halloween Night! It sounds great, and it just sounds like the kind of thing that Louisville would invent.
We are not going to be doing our Spring Event next year, and the Fire Fighters would normally be throwing Candy from the Fire Truck during the parade.
Maybe there was concern that we would get in a Candy Overstock situation.
Probably Not
This is going to be a really festive Halloween Night, with the Scarecrows on Main Street, and the Costumed Creatures of the Night heading towards the Good Times.
There will also be a special Birthday Celebration to Honor our Louisville Mayor
Just as a reminder it is a part of our Louisville Tradition to Create a thoughtful birthday card and deliver it to the bank
teachers; lets get those kids busy with the construction paper and markers
Kids, do your best to make the Perfect Birthday Card for:
