LOUISVILLE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR TYSON WARNER TO BE HONORED WITH
A $12,000 SCHOLARSHIP AT THE SALVATION ARMY’S D.J.’S HERO AWARDS LUNCHEON ON MAY 3

OMAHA, Nebraska (April 18, 2022) -- Louisville High School senior Tyson Warner will be honored with the D.J.’s Hero Award -- which includes a $12,000 scholarship -- at The Salvation Army’s D.J.’s Hero Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, at CHI Health Center Omaha. 

In January 2020, Warner’s father attempted to kill him, his siblings and his mother. After a physical struggle, in which Warner’s hand was broken, the 60-minute ordeal finally ended when law enforcement intervened and shot his father.

Two years later, Warner is thriving as captain of the football and wrestling teams; a member of the track team; a history aficionado; a dedicated volunteer at youth camps, games and tournaments; and a highly valued employee at a local hardware store. 

Among Warner’s many gifts, said teacher Elin Petersen, is his resilient spirit. “Tyson hasn’t allowed adversity or trauma to define who he is,” said Petersen. “Rather than succumbing to the darkness of his family’s past, he has chosen to embrace life’s goodness and its possibilities, and we are all the better for it.” 

Warner plans to major in criminal justice with a minor in criminal psychology at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Eventually he would like to pursue a career as a homicide detective. 

ABOUT THE D.J.’S HERO AWARDS
The D.J.’s Hero Awards are underwritten by David and Peggy Sokol -- in partnership with Fred Hunzeker, Elizabeth and Mike Cassling, Marilyn and Jim Schroer and Kathy and Larry Courtnage -- in memory of D.J. Sokol, who lost his battle with cancer in 1999 at age 18. The awards recognize Nebraska high school seniors who exemplify perseverance and selflessness and who are servant-leaders in their communities. A total of 189 D.J.’s Hero scholarships have been awarded to Nebraska students over the past 23 years, including 17 new scholarships in 2022.
