Settling In
Life in Louisville
The End of the Summer of '08 is in sight
This has been a rough summer. We started with an almost constant series of threatening weather. It seamed like the trip to the basement with the radio, was a nightly routine. Certainly no one will ever forget the night in June we lost 4 Scouts including Clete's Grandson Ben.
The world stopped to mourn the tragic loss.
(I suspect that if a normal person lives to 99, that person may have touched or influenced 20,000 people over their life time. I can't think of anyone in all of history that ever touched a million people by the age of 13 like Ben Petrzilka and his Scouts did)
The Platte was full and neighbors were pumping out their basements round the clock. TV and radio news was bleak, the cost of food and gas sobering, then the heat settled in and cooked us all for a couple weeks. The garden was a complete failure, no salsa this year.
We are going to be talking about this summer for quite a while.
The world suddenly brightened when I heard the sound of our Marching Band practicing. It signalled the coming of the fall, football season, and that feeling of all things returning to normal. My wife heard the marching music and went in to her Pom-Pom waving, hi kicking cheer-leader stance as she felt the same wave of happiness.
I guess that is why we all live down here. There is a fundamental feeling of peace, that comes from simple, and familiar things. Kids are all back in school, weather is moderating, Main Street is looking all clean and prosperous.
Hey, did you see the article in the August 18th World Herald!
There is a new restaurant in Nebraska City called: Lil' Dickies Steakhouse
JOHN FERAK of the Omaha World Herald spoke to
Julie Naberhaus of Nebraska City
Real estate agent Julie Naberhaus of Nebraska
City called the
restaurant an integral part of the effort to invigorate downtown and give
people more reasons to spend time there. Naberhaus wants downtown to model itself after Omaha's Old Market
and the Louisville,
Neb., Main Street, which has a collection of
boutiques, art galleries and specialty stores.
Nice!
I think that we can all take some pride being grouped with the popular Old Market, and being on Nebraska City's short list of:
"places we would like to be more like!"
I for one am more than ready for the peace and tranquilty that flows from watching some leaves turning color, sipping some cider, and viewing some soothing smash-mouth football!
