Dear Cancer Survivors,

I'm writing to extend an invitation to participate in the American Cancer Society 2010 Relay for Life of Cass County. It will take place on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Plattsmouth High School. The planning of this annual event, which is in its 15th year, begins a month after the previous Relay. It’s a huge undertaking but a labor of love for all of our committee members. We want to help the American Cancer Society help all of you and your families in so many ways.

As cancer survivors you are what the Relay For Life is all about - you all are basically the "heart" of it and the reason we all work so hard to make it better every year. I became increasingly involved over the last several years because of my history with cancer (I'm a two time breast cancer survivor -and very proud of it!). Some of my fellow committee members are also survivors and of course we have all been touched by cancer involving loved ones as well.

What I'm asking of you is simple. Please plan to attend the Relay even if only for a short time. We need the opportunity to honor you with a survivor dinner at 5:30 PM and the celebratory survivor lap at 7 PM which is the start of the twelve hour event. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside all of you. Our goal is to honor 100 (men, women & children) survivors this year.

I ask that you either call our American Cancer Society Staff Partner, Megan Maryott at 1-402-393-5801 X70770 or logon to www.relayforlife.org/casscone and select "Sign Up As A Survivor" and complete the registration - there is no charge for survivors. We are running out of time so please do it soon.

It's that simple - will you do it? It won't be quite the same without you!

                                            Very Gratefully,

                                                                  Jan Young

Friends of Plattsmouth Main Street:

On Sunday, June 20th, the Plattsmouth Main Street Association is sponsoring an “Old Fashioned Father’s Day in the Park” at Rhylander park in Plattsmouth. As you can see from the attached flyer, the featured event will be an old-time base ball game.  As a result we are recruiting players for our local team, “The Cass County Railroad Ruffians” and we invite you to choose a member of your organization as your representative on the team.

This will be a game of light-hearted fun and friendly competition. The rules of 1860 are a much less strenuous game than modern baseball and 9 innings will last less than 2 hours. In fact, the pitcher throws underhand and is encouraged to throw the ball where the batter requests it to be thrown. Also, it is an “out” if the ball is caught without having touched the ground OR after one bounce. So, as you can see, this game will move along quite quickly. I have seen the Wichita team play. They play for fun and love to “razz” each other and the opposing team. They told me that they win about 50% of their games.

This will require no financial contribution on the part of your organization. Our only hope is that you will bring your families out to enjoy the day and share in the fun and relaxation of a simpler era.

Please let us know by May 27th if you do or do not have have someone who is interested in playing on the Cass County Railroad Ruffians base ball team for this event.

Sincerely,

Jan Sandoz, Day in the Park Event Coordinator

 Newsletter fresh and up-to-date!

    Dear Louisvillians,

Happy early Father’s Day to all of the fathers out there!  I hope your summer is going well and that you have a wonderful day!  Hopefully, your children have something special planned for you!  What’s your favorite part of being a father?  Do you plan to spend the day with your own father and/or your children?  Do your children live nearby?  How often do you spend time with them?  Whatever the day has in store for you, I hope that you feel loved and appreciated; you definitely deserve it.
In case you were wondering, here’s a little bit of information about Father’s Day, courtesy of History.com.

Father's Day, a holiday which honors fathers worldwide, is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June. It originated in the United States in 1910, a few years after the country began celebrating Mother’s Day. Father’s Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1972. Father's Day, in the United States, is a holiday (third Sunday in June) to honour fathers. Credit for originating the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, which at the time was becoming established as a holiday. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd's father. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the observance, and in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson officially proclaimed it a national holiday. Observance on the third Sunday of June was decreed by law in 1972.

I know that I feel incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful father in my life, and I know that he did a wonderful job of raising my siblings and me.  Perhaps you have a father like that too.  However, I’m certain that there were times along the way, as he was raising me, that he didn’t always make the “correct” decisions.  Of course, all fathers are human and are apt to make mistakes.  Bill Cosby, though, (one of my favorite past TV shows) said it well in his quote below:

"If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right." -- Bill Cosby

.  Happy Father's Day to all the past, present and future fathers out there!

Have a wonderful week, Louisvillians!

Paula
