With Independence Day fast approaching, it’s evident that sparks are in the air. I’m certain that many of you have heard the pops, cracks, whistles and sizzles of the firecrackers and fireworks on these summer nights. I’ve been thinking about the United States and the freedoms that we have in our lives because of the work of great people so long ago.
Perhaps we can compare our lives to the firecrackers/works that are readily available for purchase at many of the surrounding tents.
Fountains: These create sparks that flow up like fountains and spill on the ground. Our lives sometimes overflow with good events, people and things…to the point of spilling over. Sparks of energy emerge as we continue to move through life, and the varying colors can represent the different flavors of life: different people, places and things to explore. Fountain fireworks represent the beauty in life.
Snaps: These small firecrackers are thrown and make a snapping sound. Sometimes, in the blink (or snap) of an eye, your life can be completely altered, just like a snap cracking on the ground. So, the advice here is: enjoy every minute and cherish precious time spent with family and friends.
Sparklers: These fireworks can be held by a stick, and they set off sparks. Kids love sparklers, but adults should be the ones holding them. If you are a sparkler fan, hold it away from your body. Sparklers are a personal favorite because they seem to offer an everlasting joy, emitting their shine and shimmer as they cast a glow on the holder’s face. Special memories, like trying to write one’s name in the air while holding one or waving them like a magic wand, are what make these a summertime favorite for many.
So, whatever fireworks you choose to use this Independence Day season, enjoy and be safe. And, think beyond the fire, flame and fountain of color to what the fireworks might represent.
Happy Independence Day, Louisvillians!

Paula
