Heatstroke 100 Bike Ride

The Great Plains Bicycling Club (GPBC) is sponsoring the 6th annual Heatstroke 100 bicycle ride through Saunders, Sarpy, and Cass Counties on Sunday August 29th.  The ride starts at the SAC Museum and includes three loops totaling 105 miles.

The three routes explore the scenic Platte River valley and pass through the towns of Ashland, Louisville, South Bend, and Ceresco.  Two of the loops cross the Lied Platte River Bridge.  The loop distances are 24, 35, and 46 miles.  Riders can cycle one, two, or all three of the loops.  The ride begins at 7:30 a.m. and the last of the riders should be finished by 5:30 p.m.

Depending upon the weather, the ride is expected to draw 250-300 riders.  Along the routes on roads with no shoulders there will be signs stating "Caution: Cyclist Ahead".  The club also has 2 - 3 roving SAG vehicles along the loops to assist riders who have equipment failure or simply "run out of gas".  In addition, members of the Lancaster County Ham Radio Club are providing communications along the route.
Several stationary SAG stops with snacks and beverages will greet riders along the route.  Grilled brats will be available afterwards at the SAC Museum.  Registration fees are $25 for an individual or $50 for a family.
If you’d like to join the riders you can find more information at www.greatplainsbikeclub.org .  If you’re not inclined to join the riders, then please watch out for them out on the roads.

Heidi Warner says goodbye...

After 10 years of volunteering as your local American Red Cross coordinator, I have decided it is time to give up this position.  It has been a great 10 years watching the community come in every 3 months and donate blood.  I have met so many caring and giving people in the town, and I'm happy to say they have become friends to me over the years.  I thank every one of you for taking time out of your schedule to come in and save one more life!!
I have a blood drive the end of September and I am looking for someone or an organization that would be willing to work with me, so that when the blood drive is held in December, this person/organization can take over completely.
If you have any questions that you would like to ask, please email or call me.
Again, thanks for all the support the community has given me in helping me run the drives.  If it wasn't for you coming in,  I would never have met my goals over the years.

 Dear Louisvillians,

       Sweltering.  Oppressive.  Stifling.

What do the three clues above indicate?  It's not difficult to realize that these three adjectives all describe the excessively hot weather we have been experiencing lately.  Have you watched the weather lately?  Have you checked weather.com?  Are you one of the unfortunate folks who has to work outdoors during the heat of the day?  With excessive heat warnings lasting from Monday until Thursday of this week, it's evident that the August heat and humidity is here to remind us that Nebraska offers extreme temperatures for everyone:  bitterly cold temperatures in January with blankets of snow and sheets of ice (do you remember those days?) and the humidity and hard-to-breathe air of high-90s days!

So, what's a person to do during these dog days of summer?  Here's some advice we all know, but it's a good reminder for all of us. CBS News offered some of these helpful tips, and I would like to pass some of those along to you.

        1.   Drink plenty of nonalcoholic fluids,

        2.   Pace yourself when working outdoors

        3.   Wear lightweight clothing,

        4.   Seek air conditioning,

        5.  Take cold showers.

        6.  Use common sense. Schedule your outdoor activities to avoid the hottest parts of the day, and use a buddy system if necessary to keep watch on those at high risk.

        7.  Eat something cool or cold, like ICE CREAM, to lower your tongue temperature and bring a smile to your face!

        8.  Realize that winter is only a couple of months away!  Maybe that will cool you down a bit!  :)

In the meantime, Louisvillians, try to enjoy the remaining days of summer and the temporary heat.  Try to stay cool in the sweltering, oppressive, stifling heat and feel fortunate that we have the wonderful invention of air conditioning!

Have a wonderful week, Louisvillians!

Your Louisville News Editor,

Paula
