Blood Drives - American Red Cross

During the summer months, blood donations often drop to low levels.  As the nation’s single largest supplier of blood products and specialized laboratory services to

area hospitals, the Red Cross needs your help to remind all eligible donors that summer is a good time to give.

From May 25 through Sept. 14, presenting donors (age 18 and older) can register online at redcrossracing.com to enter the Red Cross Racing “Summer Drive

Sweepstakes.” Enter for a chance to win a new, fuel-efficient 2012 Ford Fiesta SE.

Red Cross Racing participants also get points for activities like giving blood and recruiting blood donors. Points can be redeemed at any time for fun racing-themed

prizes or donated to support the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces.

Thank you for your continuing support to help build awareness about the upcoming American Red Cross blood drives in your community.  Please let me know if you

need any additional information.

Blood Donors Can Get Going this Summer with the American Red Cross

The more donors “give” the better chance they have to “go” to Orlando, Florida!

Blood donations often decline during the summer while the need for blood remains constant. Approximately every two seconds a patient needs a blood transfusion.

This summer the Red Cross has introduced the Good to Give. Good to Go. promotion as a special way to thank those who make time to give blood during the summer

months.

Good to Give. Good to Go. is designed to raise awareness of the need for summer blood donors and to encourage frequent American Red Cross donations. All

presenting donors (ages 21 and older) between May 16 and September 7, 2011 will have a chance to win a trip for four to Orlando, Florida each time they visit the Red

Cross. Presenting donors of all ages are eligible to win other fun summer prizes during specific holiday timeframes!

Cass County 4-Hers experimented and expressed their creativity by combining chemistry and art to create a designer-look t-shirt along with making clay pot people and bottle cap art pieces at the Discover 4-H Discover You Workshop on June 9 at the Cass County fairgrounds.

Jennifer Bright, Cass County 4-H leader, kicked off the annual 4-H Passport to Adventure Family Fun Night, June 7, at the Cass County fairgrounds with an account of her experiences in Russia followed by a presentation of Russian fairytales by Svetlana Rasmussun, UNL graduate student and member of the UNL Russian Club. Participants then made the rounds to experience Russia with crafts and demonstrations consisting of traditional lacquer boxes, matryoshka (nesting) dolls, Russian paper cutwork, Faberge eggs, camomile (national flower of Russia) planting in hand decorated pots, sputnik space shuttle rockets, blinis (Russian pancakes), kitemaking, Russian name magnets, playing Tetris (puzzle video game originally designed and developed in the Soviet Union) with the help of Russian native Irina Ogorodnova Harrington, displays of Russian items and authentic Russian food tasting. 4-H Junior leaders and adult volunteers helped implement the activities.

JOPLIN, MISSOURI
ANIMALS NEED ASSISTANCE!

I will be leaving on June 16th and return on June 22nd. I will be driving my humane vehicle which as most of you know a mini-van, I will have several kennelswith me but I would like to pack as much as I can fit into this vehicle and take some supplies along with me.
So if anyone wants to donate any of the below
items please contact me or Betty Henry.
My numbers are (402) 320-2882 or Betty at (402) 296-4191.

Here is a list of items that the temporary shelter in Joplin can use:

business items such as envelopes, sharpies, printer paper, pens, etc

bleach/cleaning supplies (no "sol" products, lysol etc as it is toxic to cats)
gloves
cat litter
toys/chewies/stuffies for dogs and cats
dog and cat treats
blankets/towels ( I have a couple big bags of these things that I will take)
bottled water
(so far I have found nothing that says they need cat/dog food) and I can't get anyone by email or phone so not sure if they need that or not, but can't hurt to
take some along)
anything else that you think would help over 500 displaced animals.

NOTE: 6/13/11
After talking with Sue about their needs she said that her space for packing supplies is pretty limited and if anyone is willing to donate to this cause, cash and
gift cards would be preferable. Gift cards for Walmart, Petsmart, Petco or any place where they can purchase any of the above items would be great.

She asks that the money or gift cards be placed in an envelope and marked for Joplin Humane Society along with your contact information (name, address,
phone number) so they can thank you. She plans to leave Plattsmouth early afternoon on Thursday 6/16. She wanted to stress the importance of the
information to identify the person donating.

Nebraska attractions open for business
Flooding closes one Passport site

LINCOLN, NEB. (June 9, 2011)—Potential flooding has closed one attraction on the 2011 Nebraska Passport, but the other 32 remain open.

The Passport program rewards participants with prizes for visiting and collecting stamps from attractions featured in a souvenir passport.

Buffalo Bill State Historical Park in North Platte, one of the passport sites, is closed temporarily due to rising water on the North Platte River. Passport participants canget their Buffalo Bill stamps at the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau, 1221 S. Dewey St., Suite A, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

All other North Platte attractions, including Cody Park, the Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center, and Fort Cody Trading Post, are open, and the town’s annual NEBRASKAland Days celebration kicks off Saturday. Additionally, the 32 other passport sites and most attractions across the state are open.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the communities affected by flooding,” said Christian Hornbaker, director of the Department of Economic Development’s Traveland Tourism Division. “At the same time, we want travelers to know that most of the parks and attractions in Nebraska are open for business, and we encourage people to get out and explore the state.”

Although there is flooding along the Missouri River near the town of Niobrara, the Niobrara River near Valentine, Neb., is open for tubing, canoeing and other water sports.

“We have been getting a lot of calls here in Valentine from people concerned that the Niobrara River is flooding as well,” said Dean Jacobs, executive director of theValentine Chamber of Commerce and Cherry County Tourism. “Just to be clear, the river here is not flooding. In fact, the levels are perfect right now for floating.”

Travelers can check the status of their destinations at the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency website, http://www.nema.nebraska.gov/newsroom/flooding-information.html, or at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission site, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/campaign/flooding.asp. Travel advisories and road accessibilityare available at http://www.511.nebraska.gov/atis/html/index.html.

For more information on the 2011 Nebraska Passport and a list of participating sites, visit www.NebraskaPassport.com. Interactive maps, road trip ideas, trip planners and more are available online at www.VisitNebraska.gov.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

As you may or may not know, Good Times Bar will be hosting a poker run that will end with a street dance to benefit the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for a Cure charity.  Over the past 4 years, Good Times has been a stop on this poker run and during that time we have had the pleasure of becoming friends with the event coordinators, Dale & Mindy Currington.  They are AWESOME people and HUGE supporters of the Louisville 6/20 Poker Run & Street Dance.  They even brought their own crew down last summer to volunteer their time in making our event a great success!

We would like to repay their kindness by extending an invitation to our friends & family to volunteer at their event this year. The festivities will be held on Saturday, June 25th.  Volunteers are needed for 2 hr time slots from 9 AM to 12 AM.  Please visit the following website and consider volunteering your time for this worth while cause.

It will be an awesome day filled with fun, friends, food, drink and an AWESOME street dance to cap it off.  National touring  www.KrisLagerBand.com will be headlining the event.  They put on a fantastic show!

If you are unable to volunteer, we still love to see you at the event!  Be sure to tell all you family & friends.

Thank you!

Dear Louisvillians,
Father's Day is this coming Sunday, June 19.
Who are the special fathers in your life?  Are you married to a special one?  Are you the son or daughter of a great father?  Perhaps you have a pretty unique grandfather to brag about.
I was thinking about my own father and the numerous homemade gifts and cards that I have given him over the years.  It's difficult to believe that my dear old dad has been a father for over thirty years.  Over those years, I have drawn him family portraits (with dangly arms and googly eyes), given him various rainbow-colored cards and, of course, there was the over the fence tote for him...for him to use in his shed.  It was, of all colors...pink.  To boot, we decorated it with images and labeled it with fancy letters.  I'm sure he rolled his eyes.  But, guess what?  He still uses it.  And, maybe he thinks of his children when he sees it.  I hope so.
What's on your weekend agenda?
Do you plan to celebrate Father's Day?
I hope so, and to all the fathers out there who read this...a very blessed and Happy Father's Day to all of you!
Your Editor,
Paula
P.S.  There are fliers and events galore in our town and the surrounding communities nearby!  Take  a moment to read above to find out the latest happenings!  Enjoy your summer and find some time to do the things you truly love!
