A Letter from Louisville Public Schools Superintendent

August 23, 2011

Patrons and Parents,

On behalf of the Louisville Public Schools, I would like to thank each of our parents and patrons for their continued support of our students, staff and district. Last Thursday, August 18th, we opened the doors to 544 students for the start of the 2011-12 school year. Our students were excited to be back and look forward to the challenges and successes of a new school year.

As we begin the new year, teachers will establish base-line data for each of their students. Throughout the year they will be able to assess and monitor student progress so in the spring we will be able to document student learning, which will help guide students and staff in future course selection and instructional strategies. My goal for each of our students is that for each year they attend Louisville Schools, they will demonstrate at least one years growth. In regards to current student data, the district this past summer purchased a new math series for elementary, middle school and high school math programs. We recognized the need and will now work with our teachers to insure student growth in math.

This year will also be the first full year for high school students in the 1 to 1 technology initiative that was implemented last January. The district has already begun to plan financially for the future of technology purchases for our students and staff.

Construction is always a challenge for students, staff, administration and contractors. It is our goal to not only complete the construction process, but to also continue with high expectations and results in the classroom. Cheever Construction has been working closely with district administration to insure safety and as little disruption to the learning environment as possible. This past week the new south parking lot and entry were made available to the district for use. What a difference for parking this addition has made. I am hopeful everyone has found the new lot to provide adequate parking and efficient traffic flow. We have also established the upper elementary lot for patrons who visit our school during school hours. Please remember that when busses are stopped and unloading, all traffic should be stopped.

Beginning Thursday, August 25th, we will begin to see the building and the stadium project move forward in high gear. Our engineers have resolved some soil challenges that have kept the project at a stand still for the past 5 weeks. Weather permitting; the track and field will still be completed this fall for use in the spring, while the building project should be completed by next summer. All in all, we still plan to have the entire project completed by September 1, 2012.

I want to thank everyone for a great start to the school year and also for your patience and flexibility during construction. I also want to thank you for the opportunity to work with so many outstanding parents and patrons to insure the best possible educational experience for each of our students.

Sincerely,
Greg Shepard, Superintendent

SENATOR PANKONIN ANNOUNCES

RESIGNATION FROM LEGISLATURE

(LINCOLN, NE) – State Senator Dave Pankonin of Louisville, Nebraska announced today that he will resign from his District 2 seat in the Nebraska Legislature effective October 7, 2011. Pankonin was first elected to the legislature in 2006 and was re-elected in 2010.

“It is with sincere regret that I announce my resignation from the Nebraska Legislature,” Pankonin wrote in a letter to his legislative colleagues. “It has been an honor and privilege to represent the citizens of District 2. However, in the spring of last year my responsibilities for our family businesses changed. After much careful consideration I have concluded that my new obligations mean I can no longer devote the time that is required to continue in office and represent my constituents effectively.”

Pankonin cited his ongoing involvement with his family’s agricultural equipment dealership and his added responsibilities with Home State Bank in Louisville, due to the sudden death of the bank’s president last year. Pankonin’s family has been associated with Home State Bank since it was founded in 1915.

“The people in District 2 are great people, and they need and deserve a state senator who is able to give them the best representation possible,” Pankonin said. “I’ve done that the past five years, but I see new challenges on the horizon with my family’s business interests that are going to take too much time away from my role as a state senator. It wouldn’t be fair to my constituents to continue in the office without being able to put in the necessary time and effort to serve them well. My friends and colleagues know when I take on a job in public service, I do it to the best of my ability. In the future, I wouldn’t be able to give them my very best, and District 2 deserves a senator who will work hard to represent their interests in the Nebraska Unicameral,” Pankonin said Wednesday.

“My five years as a state senator have been the highlight of my 19 years of elected public service. I have especially enjoyed the friendships with my colleagues and the opportunity to contribute to an institution that I will always respect and treasure. I want to thank everyone for their understanding of my situation and the difficult decision I must make. My wife Lori and I want to especially thank the citizens of District 2 who placed their faith and trust in me to serve them in the legislature. That honor will never be forgotten,” Pankonin said.

Pankonin served as a member of the Health and Human Services Committee; the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee; the Revenue Committee and was chairman of the Nebraska Retirement Systems Committee from 2009-2010.

Louisville Art Gallery: Stolen Painting

Please return - no questions asked!!

Cowboy_by_Melissa_Husby

Dear Everyone,
I am attaching a j peg of a painting that has disappeared from the Gallery. This has probably occurred in the past 8 months. I have rented the space to a couple of groups and hate to think that someone would have stolen this painting, but there is really no other explanation. I only want it returned, no questions asked. Please send this to everyone you know, so whomever has this painting will be unable to hang it on the wall. I will be putting up wanted posters around town and an ad in the Plattsmouth Journal.

Thank you for your help  STEVE
