Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program Welcomes Four New Volunteers
The Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is proud to announce that four new CASA Volunteers were sworn-in by Judge John Steinheider on Wednesday October 19, 2011. A brief reception was held following the ceremony to wish the new CASA Volunteers well in their advocacy for Cass County’s abused and neglected children. The new CASA volunteers are Leslie Duvall, Denice Eaton-Heim, Karen Muhvic and Marcia Nickels.
Currently there are a total of 49 Cass County children who are under the jurisdiction of the court because of abuse and/or neglect. 32 of those 49 children are being advocated for by only 14 Cass County CASA volunteers. Children range in age from a few months to 18 years old. Many of the children live unsettled lives waiting for their parents to solve the problems that brought the children to the attention of the authorities, and under the courts jurisdiction.
CASA volunteers usually work with one case at a time. They get to know the children well and write reports for the Judge, making recommendations about what would be best for the child. They become a stable, reliable presence in the child’s life during a very difficult time, and advocate for the child to have a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.

Visit the haunted library jail on Saturday, October 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Auditorium for our Halloween party. We will be making "Cemetery Cups" with cookie tombstones, gummy worms, and devilish pudding to enjoy with our "Rotten Apple Punch". We will also be playing games and enjoying spooky storytime with those brave souls who dare to enter. Bring your "Get Out of Jail Free" card, you may need it to be able to go home.
The party is for free for kids in Preschool to 4th grade. Registration is preferred, but not required. Please call the library at 402 296 4154 to make reservations for this howling good time!

Halloween Doesn't Need to be a Dangerous Night for Children
Child pedestrian deaths double on Halloween night
From Sarpy County / Safe Kids program: "Many kids will be out trick-or-treating while it is dark when it is more difficult for drivers to see them. There are several easy and effective behaviors that parents can share with kids to help reduce their risk of injury. For example, children younger than age 12 should not be alone crossing streets on Halloween without an adult. If older kids are mature enough to go trick-or-treating without adult supervision, parents should make sure they go in a group and stick to a predetermined route with good lighting."
In preparation for Halloween, Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass will team up with Walk This Way program sponsor FedEx to provide kids with reflective materials to promote visibility, including zipper tags that can be attached to costumes and trick-or-treat bags, as well as important safety information to children, parents, and drivers.
Drivers need to be extra alert as there will be more children on the streets and sidewalks – and those kids may be focused on gathering candy and the excitement of the holiday rather than being careful while crossing streets. "Safe Kids and FedEx urge drivers to slow down on neighborhood roads to make Halloween more enjoyable for everyone, but also to help save lives," added Jane Husz, Sarpy/Cass.
Top safety tips Safe Kids USA recommends for parents:
• Cross the street safely at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Walk, don’t run, across the street.
• Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
• Slow into the street or cross in between parked cars.
• Costumes can be both creative and safe. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Masks can obstruct a child's vision, so choose non-toxic face paint and make‐-whenever possible instead. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights in order to see better and to be seen by drivers.
Safety Tips for Drivers:
• Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30pm. Be especially alert and take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
• While pedestrian safety is a main concern on Halloween, parents and kids should also be careful when dealing with candy. "While kids never want to wait to dive into their candy, it is best to check sweets for signs of tampering before children are allowed to eat them," says Jane Husz, Safe Kids Coordinator Sarpy/Cass “Remind children to only eat treats in original and unopened wrappers."

American Red Cross Blood Drives in Cass County:

November is a month of giving thanks and we are reminded on November 11, Veterans Day, of the importance of giving thanks to the people who serve our country. The Red Cross supports Service to the Armed Forces in many ways including proving blood products for veterans through hospital partnerships with many Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
Currently, blood products are going out to area hospitals just as quickly as donations are coming in, so the American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood and platelets. It is imperative that there is a consistent and stable blood supply for all patients in need.
