Heartbroken
Last Hot Sunday in July 2011 - antique cars parked in front of the Louisville Hardware store.
Fire blaze that started around 1am on Tuesday morning, November 1st - and the fire that lasted for hours - destroyed one of the most loved local businesses, Louisville Hardware Store owned by Larry and Maureen Gulizia.
"Words can not express the loss Louisville and the surrounding area experienced last night." Said mayor of Louisville Alan Mueller. "Maureen and Larry Gulizia have operated a top of the line hardware store in our community for many years that added to the growth and prosperity of Louisville. The city is thankful for the support of the area fire departments that worked through the night to protect the rest of our community. "
"Beautiful downtown Louisville woke up with an ugly scar this morning.
Louisville Hardware burned down. Much, much more than a building was lost in the fire. With a storied past stretching back a century, the store had been the life’s work of Main Street pillars through the years.
Most recently, owners Larry and Maureen Gulizia put up a major addition when many other businesses were cutting back. Hundreds of staff hours went into an effort to completely reorganize and upgrade the offerings. The biggest investment on Main Street in more than a decade was a bet that good service, square dealing, and meeting the needs of the community would continue to be a winning combination.
We’ve had it good in Louisville with our locally-owned businesses. No big-box store could compete with the knowledge and expertise made freely available at Louisville Hardware to help us fix our plumbing, paint our living rooms, keep our mowers running, hang our curtains and take care of our homes.
So before starting in on questions about the future and speculation about the inevitable recovery, let’s pause to honor the long and noble work that took place in that building through the years, and offer our solace and support to the Gulizia family." - Mark Leibman
"Louisville Hardware has been a neighboring business of mine for more than 18 years. I would like to express my sympathy for their loss. Larry and Maureen are strong leaders who have always been there for the community. The community will be there to help and support them at this time of need. The business owners and BUILD members I spoke to this morning have all been positive and are willing to come together to do what they can. For now, lot’s of hugs and words of comfort and encouragement will help! " - Terri Scholting,BUILD President/American Family Insurance Agent
"It is with a heavy heart & tears in my eyes that I write this, today I learned one of my favorite places to visit in downtown Louisville is no more. Louisville Hardware has burned to the ground.
I loved going into the hardware store. Whenever my husband said he need to run downtown, I was never far behind. I knew while Larry or Maureen helped him locate whatever he need for his project I would get to wander the aisles & discover new things
I hadnʼt seen the last time I was in there. Of course there was always so much more than you could possibly take in in one visit. That didnʼt matter though, I was like a kid in candy shop.
It was one of my husbandʼs favorite places too. He loved taking in pieces & parts from his latest project not knowing if he could find what he was looking for. He would show the guys and search was on. Brainstorming wheels turning, they were determined to find an answer. More than not they did successfully find what he was looking for. I could make a long list of visits to the hardware store where they solved my problem of the moment.. broken sinks, overflowing toilets, alarms for the backdoor, new padlocks, spare keys, nuts, bolts & packing tape galore.. all in my hometownʼs downtown.
Our prayers go out the Gulizia Family.. from my family to yours, please know that your loss is our loss. Thank you for providing us with not just this store/service, but the friendship & all the memories. It will all be greatly missed." - Stacee Schmidt-Cottrell, Owner, Jalapeno Designs.
"What we remember about having a business across the street from the hardware store is Larry, Maureen and Joe were always available and willing to help. No matter what we needed at our Antique Shop, all we had to do was tell them the situation and they always knew what products they had to fix it....whether it be a new piece of glass for an antique cupboard, hardware for an old drawer or re-finisher to brighten up that old piece of wooden furniture.
They were also more than willing to help BUILD by donating merchandise or giving us the best price for door prizes or raffle items....very civic minded...very Louisville oriented and focused on customer service. We hope they will be back." - Nancy & Paul McManis
"I moved to town ten years ago, and since then, I have put untold miles on the sidewalk from my corner at 3rd and Main to Larry and Maureen's corner at 2nd and Main. Every project seemed to require at least six trips to the hardware store. Most trips were successful, and most projects succeeded, thanks to the advice and knowledge that was available to me just one block to the north. Electrical, plumbing, painting and planting, all of it and more could be accomplished with what I could find just down the street. I hope now that I can supply whatever they need to help them get through this difficult time." - Steven Sherman, Louisville Art Gallery

American Red Cross Blood Drives in Cass County:
11/7/2011, 1:00 pm- 6:30 pm, Weeping Water High School, 204 W O Street, Weeping Water
11/14/2011, 2:30 pm- 7:00 pm, Elmwood-Murdock High School, 300 Wyoming, Murdock
November is a month of giving thanks and we are reminded on November 11, Veterans Day, of the importance of giving thanks to the people who serve our country. The Red Cross supports Service to the Armed Forces in many ways including proving blood products for veterans through hospital partnerships with many Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
Currently, blood products are going out to area hospitals just as quickly as donations are coming in, so the American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood and platelets. It is imperative that there is a consistent and stable blood supply for all patients in need.
With your help, we are able to fulfill our mission of saving lives. Thank you for your continuing support to help spread the word about upcoming American Red Cross blood drives.
Please let me know if you need any additional information.
Sincerely,
April Oppliger - Program Manager, Communications
