Reflections on 2011 and hopes for 2012
The clean-up has started at the Louisville Harware site
"At this point in time, we have no solid plans." Said Maureen Gulizia, - "We have been dealing with lead issues in the debris from the old building. It needed to be tested several times to determine if we fit within Nebraska state guidelines for disposal in local landfills. We passed the tests and will be finishing the clean up after the first of the year.
We are currently examining our options regarding rebuilding. Since the flood plain guidelines have risen in the last two years of national flooding, we must first see if it is possible to rebuild on our current location. If it is not possible, we must then consider the feasibility of relocating the store.
Everything takes time, but rest assured we are proceeding with all due haste,"
- Maureen Gulizia, Louisville Hardware, Inc.

Happy New Year!
"Loving this weather… It’s hard to believe it is winter in Nebraska… a year ago BUILD cancelled both its December 2010 & January 2011 meeting due to snow & blizzard conditions.
The year 2011 has been challenging for businesses, families and workers across the United States. Despite this, here in Louisville, we’re fortunate to have an active and thriving downtown…
BUILD has had an exciting year, and it’s our hope that we’ve contributed to keeping a bright spot in our community. This year, as in past years, we’ve sponsored several events ~ LOV Awards Dinner, Wooden Nickel Project, Appreciation Luncheon/Community Bucks For Our Great City Crew, Holiday Lights, Flags & Banners, Ribbon Cuttings, Welcome Coffees/Open Houses, QR Project, Spirit T-shirt Project, Welcome Bags For New Movers, Fireworks Booth, Last Hot Sunday In July, Ringing In The Season Co-Op with Royal Neighbors, Werner Park Baseball Event, Scarecrows Among Us.
We look forward to running these events and more during 2012 ― just one way we fulfill our mission of “bringing business to Louisville”.
I am thankful & proud to say we are the longest running business organization in the history of Louisville. There will be much to come in the New Year. We plan to expand our efforts by getting the word out that “Everyone is welcome to join BUILD”. We will begin marketing efforts to encourage community members to join us! We hope to expand our membership and our strength in 2012. If you run a business in Louisville “OR” if you support the community ― we invite you to join us. We believe a strong business community makes a strong community overall. The more members we have the stronger we will be. Please join us!
For the year ahead, we’re once again committed to the ongoing effort of bringing people to Louisville to patronize our shops and restaurants. We’re committed to ensuring that the voice of local business is heard clearly. And we’re committed to doing everything we can to let everyone know how great a place this is to live and work in.
We wish all of you and your families a safe and joyous holiday season and a prosperous 2012."
- Terri Scholting, BUILD President

"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times for beautiful downtown Louisville, the United States, and the world.
From the tragic fire that destroyed the Gulizia’s hardware store to an escalation of the spitting contest in Washington to fiscal turmoil in Europe, 2011 brought many reasons for gloom.
The optimist must note that the American political process has always been filled with sound and fury, since we are a noisy people and we have differences and opinions. Fiscal defaults happen somewhere in the world, every decade, and the world never seems to end because of them. Something wonderful will bloom on the corner of Main and Second, sooner or later. We’ve lost old friends, and babies continue to be born.
American households have been paying down debt for three years in a row, unprecedented in our history. We’ve been saving money at the highest rate in nearly twenty years, half a trillion dollars this year. And the newfound prudence with our household finances has not prevented us from buying a little bit more each month for almost three years. The optimist concludes that America will grow slowly until it begins to grow more quickly.
Life in the 21st century is grand, if you let it be. Here’s to 2012! May it have more tears of laughter than of sadness, more joy than fear, more success than failure—although we know it will contain all those things, and more."
- Mark Leibman

"Overall I think 2011 was a good year for our community with the school addition and improvements leading the list. On the other hand, the loss of the hardware store to fire was such a tragic event. Our community still enjoys a great location, vibrant Main Street, and wonderful citizens to take us into 2012. I am hopeful it will be a very good year."
- Dave Pankonin, President, Home State Bank

" This year I will serve District 2 and the state of Nebraska by supporting good policy solutions for the important issues of 2012. I can best meet this goal by working hard and listening to as many District 2 citizens as I possibly can."
- Senator Paul Lambert, District 2
"It was an honor to work with Senator Dave Pankonin as he represented District 2 in the Nebraska Legislature. I am grateful to Senator Paul Lambert for inviting me to join his staff. This year I look forward to assisting Senator Lambert during his first regular legislative session and helping District 2 citizens who contact the office of their state senator."
- Sherrie Geier, Senior Legislative Aide , District 2

2011-12 Louisville Middle School boys basketball team
The Louisville Middle School Boys Basketball “A” and “B” teams went undefeated this season. The “C” team ended up with a 5-1 record. They were able to win some close games against some good conference teams. Several of these players have worked hard in the off season. Theyʼve participated in
extra basketball leagues and summer programs while participating in other sports.
Weʼve had great leadership with this group of players. In the past two season, every player has been eligible for every game. There hasnʼt been anyone who has had to sit out any games due to academic or discipline issues. They played every day with a great attitude and really worked well together as a
team.
Congratulations on a great season!
