Teammates Mentors in Louisville

 teammates

The TeamMates Mentoring program was founded by Tom and Nancy Osborne in 1991. The goal is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue a secondary education. This is accomplished by having a caring adult who serves as a mentor and meets with the student 1 hour a week.
Louisville School has had a TeamMates program for over 3 years and this is a picture of some of the Mentors and Mentees attending a TeamMates sponsored trip to the Creighton Bule Jays game on Sunday afternoon. "Having a Mentor is like having a best friend" says one of the young mentees.

Welcome Elkhorn Refugees

On March 1st it will have been 7 years since the forced Annexation of Elkhorn by Omaha.

Excerpt from Wikipedia: "Elkhorn, founded in 1865 by George Crawford and platted in 1867, was an independent municipality until it was annexed by the city of Omaha in 2005. In an attempt to prevent the annexation, Elkhorn almost simultaneously annexed several surrounding subdivisions in an attempt to bring the city's population above 10,000 citizens. That would have prevented the forcible annexation by Omaha according the state law. On January 12, 2007, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in favor of Omaha, saying "…we conclude that Elkhorn ceased to exist as a separate municipality on March 24, 2005, the date that Omaha's annexation ordinance became effective." The United States Supreme Court denied Elkhorn's request to hear the case on February 22, 2007. Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey said he tried for years to work with Elkhorn, whereby Elkhorn would not be annexed if Elkhorn did no further annexing of its own. Elkhorn, not viewing that as a fair proposal, refused. Omaha began the process of annexing Elkhorn. The two municipalities went to court as Elkhorn attempted to block the forcible annexation by Omaha. It was not until after losing the first round in the courts that Elkhorn offered to reach an agreement with Omaha. Omaha, having won in the courts and already financially invested in the court fights, refused to deal with Elkhorn now and continued the annexation process, a type of shoestring annexation. Elkhorn ceased to be an independent municipality on March 1, 2007."

This was actually a major news story as Elkhorn struggled to remain independent. At the time the BUILD group of Louisville had focused on attracting young families as the most effective energy to maintain controlled growth and our wonderful quality of life. The combination of Elkhorn's plight and our desire to share what is so abundant in Louisville generated an idea and a website was launched:  www.EscapeOmaha.com

At that time, websites were not as common as they are today, and this managed to go "viral" the old fashioned way - various newspapers and tv, radio media decided to shift their focus to our little town picking a fight with Omaha.

That was not the intention but it did make for some fun moments as we extended the welcome mat to the Elkhorn Refugees.

I invite you to listen to some audio from radio interviews with our Mayor Alan Mueller back from 2007:

If you are from Elkhorn, and have settled in Louisville; please reply to this email we would love to get your story!

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Louisville is searching for new organizers for their annual LAST HOT SUNDAY IN JULY auto/truck show 'n shine. This will be the 10th anniversary of Louisville's most successful event and is in danger of being the last. The current organizers, Dee & Nancy say after 10  years....they are ready to hand the reins over to people with new ideas and new energy.
If you are interested in a new adventure...NOW is the time to contact Dee Arias at the Louisville City Office (402-234-7705). The July event plans start NOW with advertising and securing food vendors and entertainment. Flyers need to be made and T-Shirts need to be designed and Dee and Nancy would like their successors to shadow them this year before taking over in 2015.
We don't want this event to and we hope someone or a group of volunteers will step up to the challenge.
