4-H CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS 2014

   “Better Citizenship Today, Better Leaders Tomorrow” was the theme of the 2014 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus Conference. Attending the week long conference in June at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland were 44 4-H’ers from Cass, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee and Richardson counties, two sponsors, and two UNL extension educators, stated Sarah Purcell, Extension Educator.
   During this conference, the 4-H’ers toured Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. Stops included: the U.S. Capitol, White House, Supreme Court, National Archives, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Library of Congress, Washington National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, plus the Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials.
   The 4-H’ers attended the Nebraska Breakfast with Nebraska’s Congressional delegation addressing the 4-H’ers and other Nebraska residents in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
   Government processes were learned back at the National 4-H Center through mock legislation and various workshops.
   A highlight of the week was the Twilight Tattoo, a military pageant that features Soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment unit wearing Army uniforms of the past and
present. A portion of the show is dedicated to providing a fast-paced travel through
Army history, from Revolutionary times to the Army’s involvement in current military operations.
   4-H’ers flew first to New York City, where they enjoyed The Lion King Broadway musical, the Empire State Building, and Central Park. They traveled to D.C. via bus and toured Gettysburg National Military Park in route.

   Cass, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, and Richardson county 4-H’ers visited with Senator Deb Fischer and Congressmen Jeff Fortenberry, Adrian Smith, and Lee Terry following the Nebraska Breakfast in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
   Cass County 4-H’ers are: Ashtyn Cooper, Emily Downs, Lauren Downs, Claire Habrock, Megan Hawks, Justin Hennessy, Natalie Knott, Jenna Meyer, Josh Meyer, Megan Murdoch, Savannah Schafer, and Emily Zakaras.
   Johnson County 4-H’ers are: Kaycee Bartels, Erika Eckhardt, Marah Hestermann, Sara Kettelhake, Micah Scholl, and Lindsay Weber.
   Nemaha County 4-H’ers are: Kataleena Helmick and Samantha Teten.
   Otoe County 4-H’ers are: Ross Bartels, Sarah Damme, Keaton Kleespies, Vanessa Knutson, Carlie Kosiba, Eddie Li, Allison Mead, Grant Moles, Samantha Parde, Riley Porter, Michael Purcell, Jordan Shanks, John Stubbendick, Garret Talcott, Ethan Wallman, and Alice Wentz.
   Pawnee County 4-H’ers are: Melissa Bausch, Hannah Davis, Carly Hunzeker, Joslyn Sharpe, and Brooke Wehrbein.
   Richardson County 4-H’ers are: Lindsay Duerfeldt, Eli Herr, and Jade Hill.
   Sponsors were Stacey Duerfeldt, Falls City and Chuck Porter, Unadilla. Kaytlyn Kennedy, Richardson County and Sarah Purcell, Otoe County, were the Extension staff who coordinated the C.W.F. experience for the 4-H’ers.

Louisville Public Library Edible Book Festival

Let’s have some fun!

What: Create an Edible book simply by creating something edible that is some- how book-related. Think book titles, characters, plots, literary figures, puns on book titles, etc. For inspiration check out Pinterest.com “Edible Books”.

Who: Participation is open to anyone! Anyone can enter or just stop by and enjoy the Edible Books Festival! Vote for your favorite in each of the categories and age groups.

When: the Last Hot Sunday in July

The American Red Cross calls on eligible donors with all blood types to help maintain a sufficient blood supply this summer

OMAHA, Neb. (July 15, 2014) — The American Red Cross encourages all eligible blood donors to make an appointment to donate blood soon to help prevent a shortage.

During the summer months, on average, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what is needed to meet the needs of patients. Vacations and summer activities are among the reasons regular donors may not find the time to give. But, patients don’t get a vacation from needing blood – the need is constant.

As a national network, the Red Cross has a unique responsibility to help ensure blood is available for patients whenever and wherever it is needed. By donating blood or platelets through the Red Cross, donors may be helping patients in their community or patients across the nation.

Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets just five days, so they must constantly be replenished.

Beginning with the Wed 5/21/2014 Newsletter all of the Communities will be able to post, buy, sell ads for general merchandise such as mowers, baby cribs, cars, computers and Real Estate.
We especially hope that the classified ads will be used to post Jobs, look for positions, and post special events, birthdays, church events and Garage Sales.

Certainly there are lots of places on the Internet to post ads, but I know that some folks are uncomfortable with using EBay or Craigs List - this is just your neighbors and should be a bit less scary.

Step 1: you do need to have an account, and an email address to manage your ads. You will be notified to renew your ad, you can change info, pricing, and pics as long as you have this account.

Step 2: create an ad, indicate if it is Elmwood, Eagle, Louisville and Alvo and post it

Step 3: wait for approval. We will approve ads as close to immediately as possible. We need to take a quick peek and make sure that it is a real ad, and if anything needs fixing we will fix it.

Step 4: post it to Facebook if you like!

Ads will now show everywhere, regardless if it was posted in Elmwood or Alvo. Our number one request was to post once, and make it visible everywhere. Ads will also be Goggle/Twitter searchable as well as location, travel directions searchable.

So, get cracking! Create that account, and post everything in your garage and basement!
