Art & Ups
World class Art Gallery in a town with No Stoplight
( the dream of Louisville City Councilman Steve Sherman )

Editors Note: Anyone that nurtures a dream of their own business might imagine a life of riches and personal satisfaction. That person would be wise to spend 30 minutes talking with Steve Sherman. In my humble opinion there is nobody better qualified to talk about the sacrifice and determination it takes. Steve brought Louisville's Art Gallery from a dream to a Main Street reality. Steve keeps it going by driving a truck for UPS every day.

The following is an Interview with the Owner and Founder of the Louisville Art
Gallery; Steve Sherman
Steve, the Gallery is beautiful, and the Art is world class, the
obvious question is why did you choose Louisville?
It was more like Louisville choose me. I was antique shopping with a friend of mine when I stumbled onto the building, and next thing you knowÖ

How long has the Gallery been Open?
It has been a little over five years since I first opened the doors. The first show was in November of 2001, and since then, the Anniversary Show is always on the Friday before Thanksgiving.

Was it always your plan to be professionally involved in art, did you
think about being an Artist yourself?
I am a non-practicing artist at this time. I had been doing some sculpture before opening the Gallery, but with my full-time job at UPS and running a business, my own art has had to take a back seat to the rest of my obligations

What is the Gallery best known for? Paintings? Sculpture?
The focus of the Gallery is to showcase original paintings, pottery, sculpture and glass by local and regional artists. If you purchase something here for you collection, you won't see another one like it in any other home or office.

Folks may not know that you are also a Louisville City Councilman, when
did you become interested in politics?
I am not interested in politics as much as I am interested in giving back to the community. I believe it is important to be involved, and it has been a wonderful learning experience. It is amazing how much goes into running a town, even the size of Louisville. The tough part is making what you know will be unpopular decisions, but they need to be made to keep things moving forward.

Can you give us a sneak peek at plans that you have for future
exhibitions or events?
The best way is to check out the website. Just go to and click on the calendar link

What do you believe are the challenges that Louisville will face in
the next 10 years?
Keeping Main Street alive will be a big challenge as the area continues to grow. Big Box stores will change the face of the community, so I believe that specialty retail would be a big draw for Omaha and Lincoln residents planning a day trip, people visiting the area, staying at the parks and looking for something to do for an afternoon.
There will also have to be some thought to a new or expanded school if the population of the area continues to move upward. Cass County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. You can't stop growth, but you can help guide it in a positive direction.

When you talk to young folks; what do you encourage them to remember when they plan their futures?
Do what you love, follow your interests, or you may get trapped doing something that doesnít suit your personality. Donít think just about the income potential, that part will come if you are passionate about what you are doing.

Do you teach art, or coach artists to help them succeed?
I am not a good teacher, but I do have a good eye and try to let the artists in the Gallery know what seems to appeal to the Galleryís client base. Thatís not always so easy, but I do try to stress quality and presentation.

What are 2 things that Louisville does NOT know, about Steve Sherman?
In a small town, are there two things that people donít know?!? If you are really curious about something, just stop in and ask, there is a good chance Iíll tell them whatever they want to know!
